DOLPHINS START OFF 2-0

The Dolphins continued their winning ways with an exciting 413 to 373 victory over Daleview. The Dolphins swam to a commanding lead at the halfway point, thoroughly dominating freestyle and backstroke. Those outstanding eight-and-under boys—Pieter Fosburgh, Sam Snedden, Max Palermo, Nicky Schulkin, and Paul Rock-- captured the first five places in free, netting 16 points for the Dolphins in one event alone! Although Daleview narrowed the lead in the second half, the dual victory in the relays resulted in a comfortable margin of victory. Congratulations to all the Dolphins! The victory was especially enjoyed by many retired Dolphins who had returned to the Pool to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Bannockburn community. And thanks to some wonderful goodies and big eating we raised a record $410 to send Martha’s Table summer campers to their end of year outing. A barbeque followed the meet with all the Dolphins and Bannockburn reunion folks in attendance. Thanks to some wonderful grillers and other helpers, we served about 225 happy people.

SWEEP SWEEP SWEEP
The girls 12 and under IM led off another set of Bannockburn Sweeps, with Callie Fosburgh, Elizabeth Fosburgh, and 10-year-old Elena Palermo doing the honors.

In addition to their sweep in free, those amazin’ 7-8 boys swept back (with Nicky Schulkin, Paul Rock and Sam Snedden leading the way) and breaststroke (Pieter Fosburgh, Max Palermo and Paul Rock). The 13-14 girls swept four of five events, with Danielle Schulkin, Malena Lair and Jordana Coronel sweeping free, Malena, Danielle and Jordana sweeping backstroke and IM, and Danielle, Jordana and Corinne Tucker sweeping fly.

And let’s not forget the girls’ sweep in the final relay, with Elena Palermo, Callie Fosburgh, Danielle Schulkin and Hannah Melrod setting the pace—and a new pool record—and the second place team of Emma Kelly-Bell, Elizabeth Fosburgh, Malena Lair and Emily Austin finishing 4.7 seconds in front of the Daleview team.

ALL STARS
Nine different Bannockburn swimmers achieved All-Star times this week in 22 great performances. Has there ever been a greater number? In comparison, Daleview had only seven All-Star times.

Bannockburn All-Star achievers included the trio of Fosburghs—Callie in IM, freestyle, breaststroke and fly, Elizabeth in free, backstroke and fly, and Pieter in freestyle and fly. Danielle Schulkin had All-Star efforts in IM, free, back and fly, with 7-year old brother Nicky enjoying an All-Star time in back. Elena Palermo earned All-Star recognition in free, breaststroke, and fly; Malena Lair in IM, free, and back; and Hannah Melrod in breaststroke. Congratulations to one and all, and special congratulations to the newest member of the All-Star corps, John Janezich, who had a stellar performance in fly.

NEW RECORDS
A truly staggering eight pool records and four team records were set in the Daleview meet. All of the pool records were set by Dolphins. In addition to the girls’ 14-and-under freestyle relay described above, the following records were set by Dolphins.

Hannah Melrod sliced 0.18 second off the pool record in 8-and-under breaststroke set by Callie Fosburgh in 2002.

Callie, in turn, trimmed 0.47 second from her team record and over two seconds from her pool record in 12-and-under IM. She also shattered the pool 11-12 butterfly record that she set last year by 0.77 second and shaved 0.06 second from the pool freestyle record set by Wendy Schleicher 24 years ago. Wendy was here for the Bannockburn reunion and to witness the new record being set.

In 13-14 IM, Malena Lair trimmed 0.6 second from the team record she set a week ago; this was also a half-second faster than the former pool record set in 1995 by Lindsey Whyte of Merrimack Park. (And yes, we do like to see those pool records being held by Dolphins.) Malena also lowered her week-old team record in backstroke by 0.2 second, which is over a second faster than the old pool record held by Lindsey Whyte.

Finally, Danielle Schulkin trimmed 0.09 second from her team record in 13-14 fly, eclipsing by 0.6 second the old pool record set by Julie Duffy of Parkland in 1984.

PERFECT MEETS
Three swimmers won every event they entered: Pieter Fosburgh and Hannah Melrod in free, breaststroke and fly, and Callie Fosburgh in IM, free, breaststroke and fly. Elena Palermo’s perfect meet was denied by the fact that she swam IM as a 10-year-old; otherwise she placed first in free, breaststroke and fly. It is not always easy to swim free after IM with less rest than one’s competitors; she is appreciated.

A WINNING SWIM-UP
Swim-ups from younger age groups are often needed by the team to fill up otherwise empty lanes and earn points. These swimmers are often underappreciated but are truly needed. Once again, the lone Dolphin swim up was Johanna Knorz, a 13-year-old visitor of the Lair family who swam free and fly in the 15-18 bracket. Amazingly, she won free and finished second in fly!! Her time in the 100-meter free event was only 4 seconds slower than the team record! Perhaps we can persuade the Lairs to invite her again next summer—for six weeks instead of two...

A MEET DEBUTS
We tip our hats to two 7-year-old swimmers making their A meet debuts last week. Kaili Gregory swam in free and back, and Arthur Ammeson swam in free. We look forward to seeing you again.

TIME DROP AWARDS
We had some HUGE time drops this week. Congratulations go to our BIG WINNER Alex Kinnaird who dropped 7 seconds in the 100 back. Second place goes to a somewhat smaller Dolphin, 6-year-old Danielle Lair, who dropped 6 seconds also in back. Another 8 and under, Mia Greene, captured third place dropping 4 seconds in breaststroke. 15-18 Caitlin Rooney also dropped a total of 4 seconds with 2 second time drops in breaststroke and fly while our German friend, Johanna Knorz took 3 seconds off in the 100m free. A slew of Dolphins dropped 2 seconds: Julie Ely in 9-10, 50m free, Sarah Alagia in 8 and under fly, Jackson Janezich in 13-14 IM, and Max Palermo in 8 and under breaststroke. Ramzy Suleiman broke a minute for the first time in 100 free. Hats off to each and everyone of you for your hard work an great swimming

B MEET
Great job at the last B meet. The B meets are a chance to get meet experience and to lower your times in order to compete for a spot in the Saturday dual meets. Remember, it is the coaches policy that unless a swimmer is legal in a stroke that swimmer shall not compete in that event at the meet. This is for two reasons. First, we do not want kids to ingrain bad swimming habits, as they are difficult to break. Second, we want to use practice time to work on strokes, not meet time. The more our swimmers attend practice, the better the chance that they will become proficient in all four strokes. The first home B meet of the year was characterized by a lot of Dolphins swimming hard and displaying improved technique—and faster times. Apparently, a lot of Dolphins and their families were eating hard as well. Food sales set a new record for a B meet. We thank the organizer of the food sales, Marcy Kelly, and her many Dolphin assistants.

PRETEAM
Preteam practice continues to have a strong turn out with the smallest Dolphins making huge strides in improving their strokes. Keep up the good work!

COACH’S CORNER – Sam Brownell
Congratulations to everyone on another stellar meet. This meet was twice as exciting because we had so many former Bannockburn swimmers in attendance to watch the incredible performances of our swimmers. The last two weeks we have broken more records than we ever have through two meets. It is a true testament to the level of commitment of our swimmers, who work their butts off during the week so that they can swim fast on Saturday. We have such a competitive team this year that it is driving everyone to work harder and swim faster. Do not get discouraged if you have not gotten the chance to swim in an A meet yet, keep coming to practice and continuing to work hard and the results will take care of themselves. Because of the predicted thunderstorms, I encourage everyone to try and make morning practice this week. Keep up the good work.

SWIMMING TIP of the WEEK
Recover with your elbow leading your hand in freestyle. This encourages a full and powerful body rotation, from the shoulders to the feet, and keeps your body in a streamlined position, which cuts down on your resistance.

DOLPHINS ON ICE
Last week’s ice skating event at the Cabin John rink was marked by a good turnout of Dolphins exhibiting exuberance, grace and enjoyment on the ice. The coaches commented that it was great to see so many Dolphins displaying the same kind of athleticism in the vertical plane that the Dolphins display horizontally in the pool. However, a few Dolphins had to be reminded that in ice skating there is no need to exhale completely before turning one’s head, or when crashing into the wall a two-hand touch is not necessary ...

TEAM EVENTS FOR THE WEEK
Providing the rains hold back, we will have a parent get together from 5:30 to 6:30 at the pool on Tuesday, June 27. (If it’s raining, this event will be rescheduled.) Come meet and get to know other parents and have any questions you might have answered. All are welcome.

This week we have a B meet on Wednesday at Palisades. Swimmers should be at Palisades no later than 5:30 pm. Volunteers are urgently needed for many positions: please sign up on the pool bulletin board. We especially need a starter for this meet.

For the third year, Dolphins will continue their wonderful relationship with Martha’s Table. On Thursday, 11-and-older Dolphins have the opportunity to visit Martha’s Table summer camp for a fun time getting to know and playing with the 7 and 8 year old campers. Parents who are willing to drive are desperately needed; the Dolphins will depart shortly after morning practice ends, and they will stay at Martha’s Table for about an hour. The following Friday, July 7, the MT campers will visit the Bannockburn Pool for a fun morning of swimming and eating. All 11 and up Dolphins are needed to help supervise the campers, teach swimming, and eat!

On Friday afternoon, the coaches will organize a movie-going event. Keep your eyes on the bulletin board for details. Drivers will again be needed. A reminder to parents that if your child is 10 or under s/he must be accompanied by an adult supervisor. The coaches cannot possibly provide adequate supervision unless other adults accompany the team on outings.

The July 1 A meet is also a home meet and should be quite competitive. As always, swimmers should be at the pool by 7:50 am for warm-ups. Parents are requested to donate items for the bake sale.

TEAM PHOTO
The official 2006 Bannockburn Dolphins team photograph will be taken on this coming Saturday, July 1. All team members are requested to be in the photo, even if they have not yet swum in an A meet. The appropriate attire is the official team swimsuit. A copy of the photo will be given to each child when trophies are distributed. The photo will be taken immediately after the A meet. Please be at the pool by 11:30. We need a volunteer photographer. Please contact Penny Mitchell at pmitch21@aol.com to volunteer.

PARENT REMINDERS
Parents are again reminded to notify coaches if their children will not be available to swim an A meet. The remaining meets are expected to be very close, and sometimes the margin of victory is only a few points. Meets held over the July 4th weekend are often won by the team who fills the most lanes. Therefore, please immediately let the coaches know if your children will not be able to swim on July 1 or 8 or 9. Also, please check the bulletin board each Thursday to see if your swimmer is swimming at the next A meet. No-shows at the July 9 Relay Carnival would be extremely disheartening. Not only does this meet count for more points in the Division standings than dual meets, but three other swimmers suffer immense disappointment when that fourth team member fails to show.

Just to reiterate to parents, if your child is 10 or under s/he must be accompanied by an adult supervisor on any team outings. The coaches cannot provide adequate supervision unless other adults accompany the team on outings.

PARENT THANKS
Special kudos go out to all those who have helped with this week of incredible swimming and the parent volunteering which went along with it. The meets were well covered with timers, officials and other workers, as well as all those food events for both the B meet Dolphin Diner, including those wonderful swimmer helpers, the A meet bake sale, and the BBQ following the A meet. Hats off to you all.

PARENT HELP NEEDED
We are in desparate need of helpers for the next TWO B meets. They won't happen without parent volunteers. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to volunteer yet, please contact Karen Tucker ( KarenSue3@aol.com ) and Sandy Spigler ( SGSpigler@aol.com ). We welcome your participation, indeed, we rely on it.

The Melrod family has volunteered to haul one of our two tents to A meets for the rest of the summer. We are thankful for their help, and would appreciate another family willing to transport the second tent. The Dolphins seriously need the shade the tents provide, and it shows in their performances. Please contact Lynn Brownell at wagtail7@yahoo.com to volunteer. Your newsletter co-editor will even buy you a pastry of your choice. Tempted?

With our resident PA announcer out of town this weekend, we need a substitute announcer for the next A meet. If you have ever longed for a career in broadcasting or simply want to see the smile on swimmers’ faces when you mention their names, please contact Lynn Brownell at wagtail7@yahoo.com to volunteer.

Please see above on team photo: we need a parent photographer to volunteer to take the team picture on Saturday at about 11:45. Please contact Penny Mitchell at pmitch21@aol.com.

DRINK DONATIONS
Please continue to bring in your case of soda, juice boxes, water or frapuccino to the pool as soon as possible. We have fed a lot of hungry and thirsty swimmers (and parents) and need to be sure that our drink supply does not run out. We especially need more Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite and Frappuccino. Many thanks to those who have done this thus far.
