HEARTBREAKER

The Dolphins suffered their first defeat of the season against Franklin Knolls with a final score of 407 to 381. Missing quite a few swimmers, the steadfast Dolphins swam their hardest with some brilliant swim ups, stalwart Dolphins coming out to do their best to fill the lanes and gain the extra points, and some stunning personal bests. Overall it was a tough meet that gave us a glimpse of the competition we will face at Relay Carnival and Divisionals and the hard work we need to do in practice over the next few weeks.

SWEEP SWEEP SWEEP
We had two terrific sweeps this week: the 13-14 boys swept the IM with Jackson Janezich, Spenser Steele, and Willie Conaghan while the 8 and under boys completely shut out the competition in freestyle taking first through fifth place with Pieter Fosburgh, Sam Snedden, Max Palermo, Nicky Schulkin and Paul Rock. Way to go boys!

ALL STARS
8 and under Nicky Schulkin captured another All Star time in back while 13-14 girls Malena Lair and Danielle Schulkin battled it out again swimming some fantastically fast times for All Stars in free, IM, and back. Danielle also added an All Star in fly. In addition, both Elizabeth Fosburgh and Elena Palermo captured All Star times in all their strokes: IM, free, back and fly for Elizabeth and free, breaststroke and fly for Elena. (10 year old Elena also swam IM again this week taking fourth.)

NEW RECORDS
Two Dolphins beat their own team records this week: Elizabeth Fosburgh set a new team record in 11-12 back while Hannah Melrod laid down a new record in 8 & under breaststroke. And here’s something amazing: then 12 year old Callie Fosburgh shattered THREE old 15-18 team records: Mary Cox’s 1976 in free, Wendy Schleicher’s 1985 IM, and Wendy’s 1986 breaststroke (and less than a second away from the record in fly). Now that’s some amazing swimming, ladies!

PERFECT MEETS
Four swimmers enjoyed perfect meets this week. Jackson Janezich won his free, back, fly and IM while Hannah Melrod took free, breaststroke and fly. Elizabeth Fosburgh dominated in IM, free, back and fly. Finally, Elena Palermo stood up to some mighty tough competition in her age group in free, breaststroke and fly to capture first in each. (The first three swimmers in breaststroke all had All Star time.) Congratulations on some mighty fine swimming!

SALUTE THE SWIM-UPS
We had one of the most unique swim ups this week. Callie Fosburgh, our 11-12 swimmer who turned 13 on July 4th, swam up with the big girls in all the 15-18 events. Not only did Callie swim up, but she also won 3 of her 4 events and set three new team records.

A MEET DEBUTS
We had some fantastic A meet debuts this week: 11-12 Sarah Silberbrandt, 9-10 Sam Ross, and 8 and under Priscilla Felton. Special mention also goes for the first A meet this season for 11-12 Leah Snider and to some wonderful 15-18 girls who came out for the meet to help us fill the lanes: Bianca Rahill-Marier and Annie Rossetti. Thank you one and all for joining us.

TIME DROP AWARDS
This week’s time drop award goes to Sam Ross who shaved a record 5 seconds off his 9-10, 50m free and Sarah Alagia who dropped 2 seconds in 8 and under breaststroke and 3 seconds in fly. Shared second place winners clipping off 4 seconds are Arthur Ammenson in 8 and Under 25 Free, 11-12 Sarah Silberbrandt in the 50m free, and 11-12 Leah Snider who took off 2 seconds in 50m free and another 2 seconds in 50m back. Finally third place goes to 3 amazing Dolphins: Willie Conaghan for 13-14 IM, Elizabeth Fosburgh for 12 and under IM, and Anita Montero for 9-10 fly. Honorable mentions goes to the following Dolphins who dropped 2 seconds off their times: Kaili Gregory in 8 and under back, Nora Harrington in 9-10, 50m free, Zoe Humeau and Hannah Melrod both in 8 and under fly, and Claire Rock in 11-12, 50m breaststroke. Hats off all of you fine swimmers!

B MEET
We had a dazzling array of swimmers at the B meet with Palisades last Wednesday. There was a break in the deluge with lasted the entire meet allowing everyone to swim all their strokes. Dolphins are continuing to improve and more and more are adding new legal strokes to their repertoire. Keep up the good swimming!

PRETEAM
Preteamers are making huge strides says coach Nura. Many of these youngest Dolphins are readying themselves for their big meet at the new Preteam Blue and Gold on July 12 where these small Dolphins will also receive their trophies for participation on the team. Our older Dolphins have continued to prove excellent, patient and encouraging helpers in teaching these small Dolphins to swim. We will also look for help from the older team members in running the Blue and Gold. Please let Nura know if we can count on you to help out with the meet.

COACH’S CORNER – Sam Brownell
Congratulations on a well swum meet this past weekend. There is nothing wrong with losing a meet when everyone turns out to swim their best. Our kids had more great swims this weekend than I can ever remember. This should give everyone confidence that your hard work in practice is paying off in the meets. Keep on swimming well in practice and your times will take care of themselves in the meets. I also want to congratulate a record number of Long Course Qualifiers this year from Bannockburn: Hannah Melrod, Pieter Fosburgh, Elena Palermo, Callie Fosburgh, Elizabeth Fosburgh, Malena Lair, and Danielle Schulkin. We also had a near miss from Nicky Schulkin in the 25 Backstroke. Congratulations to everyone on an incredible effort last weekend and get ready to bounce back with a great win at North Chevy Chase and the Relay Carnival this weekend.

SWIMMING TIP OF THE WEEK
Remember that you cannot force yourself to swim fast. Fast swimming comes from relaxing before the race, focusing on a good streamline and catching the water the first 4-5 seconds of your race, and finally, using your work in practice to power yourself through the water.

DOLPHINS at MARTHA’S TABLE
A record 16 Dolphins plus parents and coaches descended on Martha’s Table on Thursday for an hour of fun with our buddy campers. Dolphins picked up some dance moves from the girls and some bball moves from the boys. We’re excited about having the campers visit Bannockburn on Friday, July 7 right after practice until about 1pm. If you’re age 11 and up, please come to enjoy the fun with the 24 campers so that each camper may have a Dolphin buddy. Dolphins will give swim lessons to their campers, have fun in the water, enjoy a great lunch, and then head down to the Glen Echo carousel for a spin before the campers depart. We need parents to help with barbecuing and serving lunch to about 50 people.

DOLPHIN MOVIE DEBUT
The Dolphins lucked out again as many were treated to a free barbecue lunch and premier of “Superman” courtesy of the folks at WMAL radio. It doesn’t get much better than that for an afternoon at the movies.

TEAM EVENTS FOR THE WEEK
The July 8 A meet is away at North Chevy Chase. Please be at NCC no later than 8:15 for our warm-ups. As always, check the bulletin board on Thursday to see if you are swimming. Please let the coaches know BEFORE Thursday if you are unable to make the meet.

Sunday is the Relay Carnival again at North Chevy Chase. Please be at the NCC pool no later than 8am for our warm-ups. As with all meets, it’s important to be on time so coaches know that you are present and accounted for. If you are late, coaches begin to worry you are a no show and have to think fast to try and find another swimmer to substitute. As you can imagine this is especially difficult with a meet composed of all relays. Your punctuality is much appreciated. The rain date for the Relay Carnival is Monday, July 10 at 6:30pm. Please reserve this time as well and let the coaches know in advance if you are unavailable.

Our last B meet on Wednesday with Old Georgetown was rained out due to the Washington deluge this summer. We were lucky to get in three fantastic B meets already this season which helped to ready many swimmers for competition.

For the fourth year, Dolphins continue their wonderful relationship with Martha’s Table. On Friday, Dolphins 11-and-older will host their Martha’s Table summer camp buddies for some cool pool fun. Parents are needed as chaperones and to help with lunch. Activities begin around 11 and end by 1pm.

The rained out parent get together is on hold until we have a break in the busy Dolphin action.

DOLPHIN BOUTIQUE
Patricia Ferrari is our Boutique manager and has plenty of T and sweat shirts as well as caps. Please contact her if you would like one for any family member. They come in all sizes. PFerrari@sbaranes.com

PARENT REMINDERS
Parents are again reminded to notify coaches if their children will not be available to swim an A meet. We have Relay Carnival on SUNDAY, July 9 with warm-ups at 8am. We will need many Dolphins to fill the lanes. Please let the coaches know ASAP if you child is unavailable to swim. Please check the bulletin board Thursday, July 6 to see if your swimmer is swimming at the next A meet and/or the Relay Carnival. No-shows at the July 9 Relay Carnival would be disheartening for all.

PARENT HELPERS NEEDED

TENT TOTER
The Melrod family has volunteered to haul one of our two tents to 3 remaining meets – this Saturday and Sunday and Divisionals. We would appreciate another family willing to transport the second tent. The Dolphins seriously need the shade the tents provide. Please contact Lynn Brownell at wagtail7@yahoo.com to volunteer.

PRETEAM BLUE & GOLD MEET AND AWARDS
We’ve got a great new event this year just for the preteamers: the new and improved Blue & Gold meet followed by dinner and trophy presentation to all preteamers. But just like the A and B meets, this event cannot happen without your generous participation. Preteam families please contact Abbie Fosburgh to volunteer for this fun event AbbieLJ@aol.com

TEAM PHOTO
Kudos go to the many expert photographers who snapped the Dolphin team photo last Saturday. If you took a photo and think it’s any good, please contact Abbie Fosburgh to let her see your photo and select the best for this year’s picture: AbbieLJ@aol.com Each team member receives a photo at the banquet.

DRINK DONATIONS
The final A meet on July 15 will need your drink donations if you haven’t donated already. We are in need of Gatorade, Sprite, and Starbucks frapuccino. Thanks go out to the many families who have already contributed generously.
